A fun, easy way to get your kids to actually want to learn their letters... let them eat them!
A "Memory" Game, made out of cookies.
What You Need:
Sugar Cookies (cut into small squares or rectangles)
Royal Icing
Food Coloring Icing (like Wilton Food Writers)
**Small children who want to play and eat cookies
Make the cookies. I used my favorite Vanilla Sugar Cookie recipe, and cut them into rectangles using rulers and a pastry cutter. A pizza cutter or sharp knife would work as well.
I made mine about 1 1/2" x 1".
When the cookies are baked and cooled, make Royal Icing to flooding consistency. (See the link for the royal icing recipe and tips on flooding icing.)
Cover the top of the cookies with the royal icing, and allow to harden completely. I'd recommend letting them dry overnight.
Then, you just draw the letters and pictures on the cookies.
To play, always have the kids wash their hands first... then mix up the cookies, and place them face down on a placemat or table.
The kids then get to take turns trying to make a match.
And what's better than eating the spoils?
It's pretty exciting when you get a match. TWO COOKIES!
As a bonus, I saved a few of the un-decorated cookies, and let the kids draw on them. My one guy decided to make his own memory game. (S, Sun; P, Pink; E, Egg; R, Red)
This game, however, he's declared inedible because he doesn't want anyone to eat his cookies. I wonder what he thinks about eating my cookies?!
